SRI LANKA RECENT POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS: STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER TONY BLAIR

04 November 2003

I have followed the recent developments in Sri Lanka with concern. I welcome the commitment that both the President and the government have demonstrated in taking the peace process forwards. The recent developments must not be allowed to jeopardise that process. We urge all concerned to continue to work towards a negotiated settlement. The British government, reaffirms its commitment to the principles set out in the Tokyo Declaration and remains fully supportive of the search for peace.

The headline in the DAILY NEWS of March 26 which states that a 'USAID funded study shows" who is "best suited to run the country" is misleading. The findings of the poll reflect the opinion of a sample of Sri Lankan voters who were asked during the period March 5-12 "Who is best suited to run the country?"

This activity was sponsored in the belief that well-informed citizens make more responsible voters. With that in mind, readers would be better advised to consult the poll itself. The results are readily available on the CPA website at www.cpalanka.org.
